At the <\/span><b>Westhampton Free Library<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we\u2019ve discovered that our <\/span><b>3D printers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> aren\u2019t just fascinating gadgets\u2014they\u2019re also powerful tools for saving money and supporting programs across departments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our library currently has <\/span><b>three 3D printers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: two <\/span><b>Bambu Lab P1S<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> printers and one <\/span><b>Bambu Lab A1 Mini<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These compact machines have become an integral part of how we bring creative ideas to life. Patrons regularly submit print requests for their own 3D models, and our staff uses the printers to support programming that stretches our budget while adding a unique creative flair.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Turning Plastic into Possibility<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of our biggest 3D printing success stories came from our <\/span><b>Children\u2019s Department<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Each summer, the department runs a popular <\/span><b>Summer Reading Club<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where children earn <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Library Bucks<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014small coins redeemable for prizes. In previous years, we purchased printed wooden coins at a cost of over $1,000 for 1,500 pieces.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year, we decided to try something different. Instead of ordering coins, we <\/span><b>printed them in-house<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> using our 3D printers. The results were not only visually appealing but also durable, customizable, and completely reusable. Best of all, the switch to 3D-printed coins <\/span><b>saved the library over $1,000<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014proving that creativity can be just as valuable as funding.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Growing Ideas in the Garden<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our <\/span><b>Adult Services Department<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also found innovative ways to use 3D printing. The library\u2019s <\/span><b>Seed Library<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Reading Garden<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have become community favorites, offering patrons a chance to borrow seeds, learn about sustainable gardening, and enjoy the beauty of plants grown right here at the library.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To support these efforts, we\u2019ve used our 3D printers to create <\/span><b>custom gardening tools<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>planters<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><b>propagation station accessories<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These printed items are not only functional but also align with the library\u2019s commitment to sustainability\u2014reducing waste, reusing materials, and producing what we need right on-site.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Why 3D Printing Makes Sense for Libraries<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For libraries on <\/span><b>tight budgets<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 3D printing represents an opportunity to combine technology, creativity, and practicality. Once the printers are set up, the <\/span><b>ongoing costs are minimal<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014a roll of PLA filament costs around $15\u2013$25 and can produce dozens of items.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From signage holders and name tags to program supplies and educational models, the potential uses are endless. Beyond saving money, these projects showcase how libraries can be <\/span><b>MakerSpaces<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the community, inspiring innovation and hands-on learning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the Westhampton Free Library, our 3D printers have become much more than equipment\u2014they\u2019re <\/span><b>creative problem-solvers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that help every department do more with less.
